Volunteer Job Descriptions

Adult Learning Center
Provide literacy tutoring and support of adult learners in small group or one-on-one sessions. Help learners develop reading, writing, and speaking skills to meet goals. Tutors may also support GED (math, science, language arts, social studies) or citizenship testing preparation.
Collection Management
Collection Management Assistant
Assist the Collection Management department in preparing library materials for public use, repairing items in the collection, and retiring them when their time is through.
Discovery Garden
The purpose of this position is to care for and maintain the Discovery Garden by planting, weeding, harvesting, watering and greeting visitors. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in events and may share ideas and suggestions with the Garden Advisory Committee.
Friends of Mesa County Libraries
The purpose of this position is to stock and sell books and related media at the Book Drop located at the First Congregational Church across from GJHS.
The purpose of this position is to price and stock books and related media at the Novel Idea Bookstore located in the west entry way of the Central Library.
The purpose of this position is to stock and maintain the Novel Idea Kiosks located at Central, Clifton, Orchard Mesa and Fruita Branches. Books and media sold benefit the Friends of Mesa County Libraries, who distribute funds to a variety of MCL programs and events.
Information Services
The purpose of this position is to share computer skills with novice and intermediate computer users. Many library patrons are learning to use a computer for the first time. This position helps bridge the digital divide in our community.
The purpose of this position is to add new Daily Sentinel obituary records to the Mesa County Libraries online catalog with the occasional task of updating records that already exist in the catalog. This project adds to the services that the library offers and is beneficial to library patrons who are doing genealogical and historical research.
Public Services
The purpose of this position is to shelve books and media so they are readily available for patrons. This position promotes a welcoming and safe atmosphere.
The purpose of this position is to find and pick materials placed on hold by homebound patrons. These materials are then delivered by Public Services staff across town. WOW Service Areas
Youth Services
The purpose of this position is to provide a certified therapy dog for children to read to at a variety of MCL locations.
The purpose of this position is to assist Youth Services with Storytime programs. Location may vary. Volunteers do NOT read the stories.
The purpose of this position is to promote Summer Reading (SR) by assisting patrons with registration, explaining program details, and providing prizes. This position also assists staff with programs and special events, shelves books & materials, and maintains a neat and orderly room.
