Volunteer: Preschool STEAM assistant

The Central Library is looking for a volunteer to assist with Preschool STEAM! This event is for Preschoolers 3-5 years old to join us to explore themes in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. We will read books, discover new things, and do hands-on activities, all while practicing our literacy and social skills.

As a volunteer you will be greeting patrons, helping with setup/teardown, and assisting staff as needed. STEAM takes place on Fridays from 9:30 -11:30 AM. 

 

Background check is required.

Volunteer: Puppet Maker

Help inspire a love of reading and creativity in our community! As a Puppet Maker Volunteer, you’ll work alongside other teens and library staff to create simple, handmade puppets for families to take home. Your creativity and care will extend far beyond the library walls. By helping create take-home puppets, you’ll support families in continuing the joy of storytelling and imaginative play at home. These simple puppets encourage caretakers and children to play, read, and learn together—building stronger bonds and nurturing a lifelong love of literacy.

This project is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of Mesa County Libraries.

Responsibilities, Duties, Functions, Tasks:

Use provided patterns to trace, cut, and sew simple puppets under staff direction

Work assembly-line style with other volunteers to complete each stage of puppet creation

Learn every step of the puppet-making process from start to finish

Maintain a clean and organized workspace

Follow all safety and material-handling guidelines

Qualifications (minimum experience, skills, education, knowledge):

No prior sewing or crafting experience required!

Basic use of sewing machines helpful- training will be provided

Attention to detail 

Enjoys hands-on, creative activities

Ability to follow directions and work cooperatively in a group setting

Shifts will be available starting in January 2026, with specific dates and character details (we're trying for The Very Hungary Caterpillar!) coming in December.
